Most PMP certified project managers are usually from the IT (information technology) industry. I wonder if the pmp certification will be good for people who are in marketing.

Not necessarily for Marketing, its good for IT and construction other engineering companies, but you will actually waste your time if its for Marketing. For the Marketing you will need your degree first and foremost, secondly you will want to make sure that you have interned or worked for other companies in the industry you are trying to break into. Finally do not jump around from company to company seeing if you like that industry it looks horrible on a resume. Good Luck and dont do it if it is not fun, cause then its work.

I am from Project Management Institute, Bangalore Chapater. We conduct monthly training programs preparing participants for pmp certification and also conduct conrporate training for the employees of the corporates in their premises. We being a non-governmental, non-profit orgnaization, do we need to have service tax registration and charge service tax? Please clarify.

The definition given by Service Tax Dept says that :

26) “ commercial training or coaching” means any training or coaching provided by a commercial training or coaching centre;

(27) ” commercial training or coaching centre” means any institute or establishment providing commercial training or coaching for imparting skill or knowledge or lessons on any subject or field other than the sports, with or without issuance of a certificate and includes coaching and tutorial classes but does not include preschool coaching and training centre or any institute or establishment which issues any certificate or diploma or degree or nay educational qualification recognized by law for time being in force;

If you still have doubts, then better consult your CA.

I was reading about this certification online and I want to know what is the procedure for studying for this certification. Furthermore, is there an exam that one needs to appear ? How hard is this exam ? Is this certification issued by a board? I would like to know as many details as possible. Thanks in advance.

The previous answer was pretty accurate, but there were a few errors. Firstly you also need to have 3500 hours of PM experience (if you also have a degree) before you’re qualified to sit for the PMP exam. If you don’t have the experience then you might want to look at the CAPM certification from PMI which does not require experience.

Secondly, the 35 hours of PM training doesn’t really need to be "approved". Pretty much any PM training will do. However, most people do take some form of PMP prep course to help them learn the material.

There is no study guide on the PMI website. Most people find the exam reasonably hard. The exam is taken at a Prometric testing center.

Generally and legally speaking you can be hired as a project manager without being a PMP, but more and more organizations are making it a requirement.

You can read more about the PMP and CAPM certifications at the links below. On each page there is a link to the appropriate certification handbook from PMI, which you should also read.

pmp certifications certify that you are an able Project Manager. It means that you have inculcated good Managerial skills to lead and manage any kind of projects.

So even Telecom organizations do recognize such certifications as key qualifications for the posts of Managers.

Apart from the direct IT sector, such certifications are widely recognized in other hot sectors today like the Finance, Pharma, Engneering, Automation and others also.

Hi friends,
I have a 3 years exp in infrastructure services as a consultant.I want to do pmp certification but confuse about its eligibilty creteria. Am i need a 3 years exp in Project management?How they will verify the exp?
how long i should wait so that i can give the exam if i am not eligible.

You honestly should be able to take a PMP cert. exam with your credentials as an infrastructure consultant. If you cannot sub your experience, try taking 35 hours of Project Management courses…I never managed a project before becoming certified, they approved my application based on my USDA PM course credits.

Any hints, advice etc? Do I need to take a course or is studying the books enough?

Start by reading the PMP Credentials handbook: http://www.pmi.org/PDF/PDC_PMPHandbook.pdf – at least the first 20 pages, so that you understand the administration and requirements for the exam.

Then I also wrote an article titled "10 Steps to Becoming a PMP" which you can find here: http://www.pmhut.com/10-steps-to-becoming-a-pmp-part-i

These two resources will give you a good understanding of what you need to know and how to prepare for the exam.

Until next time,

I am thinking of getting certified as a PMP, any use? Any value-add?

It will help distinguish you from the pack, and get your resume noticed. It won’t necessarily get you paid any more $$ — what you’re paid is entirely dependent upon what your work experience/background is.
